Craving Simplicity

I’m not too sure if it’s just me but I miss how simple life was, at least for me, years earlier. The years we all had the Nokia 3230- seems ages ago, doesn’t it?

Growing up in a strictly middle class family in Bombay, life was much different to what it is now. Life was much more simpler. I craved happiness in much smaller things. I was satisfied. Now, it’s like I try to look for new things or events or challenges that try to make me satisfied. It’s that feeling you get when you’re hungry, and you want to eat something specific, but you just don’t know what it is, so instead you eat everything else, trying to satisfy that craving.

Living in a way too savvy and progressed world like Singapore makes me reflect back on times much easier, which are completely shunned into the past.

Back in the day, Friday nights consisted of ordering in pizzas or going to a real nice restaurant for dinner, and then a sleep-over at a friend’s or cousin’s. Ordering pizza or going to a restaurant now, in the world I live in seem way too insignificant to make me happy. Eating ice-cream was a Saturday night family outing. Now it’s out at parties, socializing which tend to cost way more.

It’s not like I’m not appreciative of what I have now, it’s a fantastic feeling to have something so easy, which earlier would’ve been tougher. Β It’s just that life being so convenient and easy just makes finding happiness more difficult.

I guess, this in a way, makes me more appreciative of what I have now, but it’s the simpler life I miss and crave ever so often. I’d love to go back to one of this Nokia phones where you could only send a text of up to 120 characters and play Snake. With an iPhone, there are way too many apps to make you pick which one will keep you best entertained. Earlier, it was Snake or Space Impact.

That’s just the crux of my post I guess, Snake v/s way too many apps. There’s a con in making life so advanced and easy and convenient that you, (metaphorically speaking) have anything you want at the press of a button.

Or maybe it’s just me…

  1. I would disagree with you in the topic of having more choices would make it harder to find happiness. On the contrary i believe that with new advancements we tend to exceed and do well so that we can have all the new gadgets and go out on the weekends where we can have a good time. Sure I miss the times where Friday was simply ordering a pizza home or just going to friends houses however it’s just called growing up, everyone will have those phases but we are now in the going out and relationship phases which surely makes our life complicated. Everyone is striving to be ‘cool’ and get noticed which makes simplicity not an option. Everyone wanted to grow up when we were kids but now that we have reached that stage we want to go back? That’s quite ironic but it eventually happens to everyone but reminiscing old memories won’t make life any simpler we have to live it what we have in order to live to the fullest? (I know that’s cliche) but that’s how i feel πŸ™‚

    1. Haha maybe I didn’t make myself clear. I agree having more choices gives one a greater chance to find happiness. But this post was more personal than anything. That when I lived in world more simpler, things we take for granted, the small things that now seem insignificant used to make me happy at one point in time.
